Animal Farm - George Orwell (3.8🌟)

Animal Farm is a modern classic novel dealing with social and political critique and which uses animals as protagonists. Orwell published this story in 1945 after the end of WWII. However he had wanted to publish it before that, something he could not do because of the controversial themes related in the novel. Animal farm is a parodic and satiric attack on the Russian totalitarian political system. As Russia was England’s ally in WWII no publisher wanted to publish a critique on an “friend”.

The novel is short, so I won’t say much here. The story follows farm animals who decide to rebel against their human farmers. The rebellion starts with the dissemination of ideas of freedom and improvement of living conditions. However, after getting rid of humans, things do not improve but get worse. An oppressive governmental system arises led by the pigs which reminds the readers of a totalitarian system in real life.

Opinion: I liked the social critique aspect of the book. I loved Orwell’s cunning style to depict reality using animals. I liked various elements in this work which are repeated in 1984. Mainly the way the Pig Government changes history first subtly but then gradually using bolder methods. Past is reconfigured according to the convenience of who is in power. On the other hand I didn’t this work as a “novel”. I found it cold, and distant. I didn’t find any of the characters appealing. However they were more interesting as a community.

My edition is a hardback with dust jacket published by Everyman’s Library. It comes with an introduction by Julian Symons, which puts the reader in context.

Animal Farm (Rebelión en la Granja) es una novela de crítica politico-social que usa animales como personajes. Orwell publicó esta obra en 1945 después de que acabará la segunda guerra mundial. Sin embargo su objetivo inicial había sido publicarla antes, cosa que no pudo hacer debido al espíritu controversial de la novela.  Animal Farm es un ataque, en forma de sátira o parodia, al sistema totalitario en Rusia y luego la Unión Soviética.  Ya que Rusia fue aliada de Inglaterra en la guerra nadie quizo publicar un ataque o crítica al aliado.

La novela es cortísima,  así que no diré mucho. La historia sigue a los animales de una granja que deciden rebelarse ante la opresión de los granjeros humanos. La rebelión surge primero con la propagación de ideas de libertad y mejora en las condiciones de vida. Sin embargo al pasar el tiempo luego de expulsar a los hombres las condiciones no mejoran sino más bien empeoran. Surge un sistema de gobierno opresor por parte de los cerdos que se asemeja a un sistema totalitario en la vida real.

Opinión: me gustó mucho como "crítica", por la astucia de Orwell para hacer un retrato de la realidad con animales. Varios aspectos de esta obra que se repiten en 1984 me gustaron, principalmente la forma que tiene el gobierno de cambiar la historia, inicialmente de forma sutil y luego de forma más descarada. El pasado se re-configura según la conveniencia del tirano de turno. Por otro lado, como "novela" la vi un poco fría, distante de la materia que discutía.  Ninguno de los personajes me pareció particularmente interesante pero como colectividad me llamaron un poco más la atención.

Mi edición es en tapa dura con sobrecubierta publicada por Everyman's Library. Viene con una introducción de Julian Symons, que sitúa al lector en el contexto socio-político de la época.

Biomega - Tsutomu Nihei (2.8🌟)

Biomega is a science fiction, seinen manga. It takes place in an apocalyptic world where a virus (or similar) has infected the majority of the planet’s population, turning them into drones (zombie-like creatures). At the beginning of the first volume we are told that the epidemic came from planet Mars. We meet Zoichi, a synthetic human who works for TOA Heavy Industries looking for a cure. His mission is to rescue Eon Green, a human girl who is immune to the drone virus. His work proves difficult as Zoichi must escape the drones and at the same time hide from executioner agents, members of the Data Recovery Foundation. This foundation wants to turn humanity into drones as part of a larger plan of evolution. The story in the other volumes continues with Zoichi and other synthetic humans searching for Eon and unravelling the origins of the virus. There is time travel, centuries later, earth is unrecognizable, and Zoichi is still working on his mission. 

Opinion: a bit of a let-down and a bit of confusion. Biomega has little dialogue so the reader has to trust the art to understand most of the story. However, in my opinion, although beautiful, the art did not work as a source of information. A few things in which I was interested were never explained in depth. For example, the science behind the virus, the science behind the synthetic humans, time travel, etc. Something I did enjoy though were some fight scenes (despite the gore) and Zoichi’s motorbike! Biomega es un manga seinen de ciencia ficción. Tiene lugar en un mundo apocalíptico en donde un virus (o algo) ha afectado a la mayor parte de la población del planeta, convirtiéndolos en drones (algo así como zombis). Al comienzo del primer tomo nos enteramos que todo este desbarajuste viene desde marte. Conocemos a Zoichi, un humano sintético, que trabaja para TOA Heavy Industries, buscando una curas para el virus, y que tiene como misión rescatar a Eon Green, una humana inmune al virus drone. La tarea resulta casi imposible ya que Zoichi tendrá que cuidarse de los drones por un lado y por otro de una especie de agentes ejecutores, miembros de Data Recovery Foundation, que quiere convertir a todos los humanos en drones como parte de un plan para evolucionar en algo mucho más grande. La historia en los otros cinco tomos continua con el humano sintético buscando a Eon y desentrañando secretos sobre los orígenes del virus. Hay viajes en el tiempo, pasan cientos de años, la tierra esta irreconocible y Zoichi continúa con su misión.

Opinión: un poco de decepción y otro poco de confusión. El manga tiene muy poco diálogo y por lo tanto el lector tiene que recurrir al arte para decodificar gran parte de la historia.  Y en mi opinión el arte, a pesar de que es bonito, no funcionó mucho como fuente de información.  Muchas cosas en las cuales me interesé no fueron explicadas en profundidad, sino más bien de pasadita.  Por ejemplo: la ciencia detras del virus, la ciencia detrás de los humanos sintéticos, los saltos en el tiempo, entre otros. Eso sí hay escenas de peleas bacanes, (mucho gore) y la moto de Zoichi es indestructible.

The Devotion of Suspect X - Keigo Higashino (4.5🌟)

The Devotion of Suspect X is a mystery and crime thriller. It was written in Japanese in 2005 and then translated into English in 2011 by Alexander O. Smith y Elye J. Alexander. This novel is part of a series of book with Detective Galileo as protagonist. As far as I know this is third novel in the series.

The story follows Ishigami a math teacher in a secondary school. He is a lonely man who spends his time between home and work. His neighbours, Yasuko, a woman in her 40s and her daughter are his only obsession. The man is secretly in love with Yasuko, but he never talks to her. One day after a rampage at his neighbours he talks to her offering help. She tells him she’s just killed her ex-husband who had been harassing and abusing her.

Ishigami’s plan consists in hide the body himself. He gives Yasuko and her daughter instructions on what to do and say in the following day in case the police find the body and come to her. This doesn’t take long and a few days later the police finds the body with the face destroyed and burnt finger tips. Slowly and although there are no indications, Inspector Kusanagi starts to suspect Yasuko. Ishigami then expands his plans to confuse the police.

Opinion: a fast read, gripping, intriguing and with a twist at the end which I loved. I think the strength of this novel is its well interwoven plot which is full of surprises. I loved Ishigami and Yukawa (also known as Detective Galileo and who is a friend of Detective Kusanagi). Not necessarily because their construction as characters but mostly because of the way their minds worked. Their thinking, reasoning, one looking for ways to hide the crime and the other trying to find the killer. At some points the battle between Ishigami and Kusanagi felt like a chess game. Each of them moving their pieces carefully and trying to guess their opponent’s next move. On the other hand, I didn’t like Yasuko that much. She was flat and lacked charisma.

The Devotion of Suspect X (La Devocion del Sospechoso X) es un thriller de crimen y misterio. Fue escrita originalmente en japones y luego traducida al ingles por Alexander O. Smith y Elye J. Alexander en 2011. Esta novela es parte de una serie de libros que tienen al Detective Galileo como protagonista. Tengo entendido que ésta es la tercera novela y no veo necesario leer las anteriores ya que cierra muy bien.

La historia sigue a Ishigami un professor de matemáticas en un colegio secundario. Ishigami es un hombre solitario que vive sus días entre su casa y su trabajo. Su vecina, Yasuko, una mujer en sus 40s, con una hija, es su unica obsesion. El hombre esta enomorado de Yasuko en secreto pero nunca socializa con ella.  Un dia Ishigami escucha un alboroto en el departamento de Yasuko y acude a ofrecer ayuda y se da cuenta que hay un cadaver escondido en la sala de la señora. Yasuko le dice que no pasa nada pero el insiste en ofrecerle su ayuda. Es aquí que Ishigami empieza a tejer un plan para ocultar el crimen y salvar a Yasuko. Resulta que el cuerpo es de su ex esposo que la estaba acosando y en esta ultima ocasión Yasuko y su hija terminan matandolo en defensa propia.

El plan de Ishigami consiste en ocultar, el mismo, el cuerpo y en darle instrucciones a Yasuko y su hija de que hacer en los proximos dias y que decir en el caso eventual que la policia descubra el cuerpo y las interrogue. Esto no tarda en ocurrir y unos dias despues la policia encuentra el cuerpo con la cara destruida y las dedos quemados. El inspector Kusanagi se hace cargo del caso y acude inmediatamente a buscar a Yasuko. Poco a poco y a pesar de que no hay indicios, Kusanagi empieza a sospechar de Yasuko. Ishigami entonces empieza a desarrollar mas su plan confundiendo mas a la policia.

Opinion: una lectura muy rápida, atrapante, intrigante y con una vuelta de tuerca al final que me encantó. Me parece que el fuerte de esta obra es la trama que esta bien entretejida y llena de sorpresas. Personajes que me gustaron mucho Ishigami y Yukawa (apodado el Detective Galileo, amigo de Kusanagi el policia a cargo del caso), no por estar particularmente bien desarrollados sino mas bien por sus mentes, su forma de pensar, razonar, uno buscando la mejor forma de ocultar el crimen y el otro tratando de descubrir al asesino. En algunas ocasiones la batalla entre Ishigami y Yukawa me pareció un juego de ajedrez, cada uno moviendo sus piezas con cuidado y tratando de adivinar la movida del otro. Yasuko por otro lado me parecio un personaje un poco plano y con poco carisma.

Lilith's Brood - Octavia Butler (4.5🌟)

Lilith’s Brood is a science fiction trilogy which deals with topics such as slavery, gender diversity and sexuality. This trilogy is also known as Xenogenesis and is comprised of Dawn, Adulthood Rites and Imago.

Broadly, the trilogy tells the story of an alien invasion after humanity had destroyed earth with wars. The Oankali is a species who have been traveling across space for thousand of years collecting and exchanging genetic information with other species. They could be described as merchants of genes and the result of countless of controlled genetic mixes between alien races. The way they operate is not simple. Once they identify a civilization on the verge of extinction they “save” them not because they are good Samaritans but to use them to evolve the Oankali with their genetic input. The Oankali use biotechnology. Their homes and ships are made of organic materials which create self-sustainable habitats. They use their own bodies to carry out their genetic experiments as they are capable of perceiving and altering every single cell, gene, chromosome in theirs and other bodies. They value life before everything, but they cannot free what they capture but they assimilate them. The Oankali enact complex social structures based on their biological schemes. They have three sexes: female, male and ooloi. These last ones facilitate reproduction. They live in trios focusing mainly on procreation which is more a biological need rather than emotional.

In Lilith’s Brood the Oankali rescue the survivors of the apocalypse after a war. They put them to sleep, cure their injuries and illnesses. After sometime they start awakening the humans in small groups to follow a process of indoctrination and training to fulfil the aliens’ plans which involves humans to consent to the procreation of hybrid babies. A plan which could take centuries.

Dawn: in the first book of the trilogy Butler relates the story of Lilith the women the Oankali choose to lead the human race in the aliens’ gene mixing project. Lilith could be the leader of a new race or the worst traitor in history.

Adulthood Rites: years after the end of Dawn Lilith’s first boy baby learns to live with his human and Oankali sides. Earth is inhabited by people living in Human-Oankali settlements and rebels living isolated from the others.

Imago: Follows another descendent of Lilith, this time the first hybrid Ooloi. This novel fills some hole explaining the nature of the Oankali, their biology and their paradigms of life.

Opinion: excellent, excellent. I think this is the type of Science Fiction I enjoy the most. Social and Anthropological Science Fiction. The Oankali are very well described and developed. For most of the three books I imagined they were real. They are very interesting beings, not only because of their appearance but because of the way they think and operate. The humans in the trilogy are trapped, kidnapped with few options and all dependent on their “saviours”. Humans have to learn how to live and survive under the Oankali’s paradigm of life. Although the Oankali could grant them “freedom” that freedom would be framed by their way of seeing the world. On many occasions Humans appear to be only puppets, seduced to form quintets with the aliens to reproduce or if they do not allow, they are left living sterile and meaningless lives. I ready somewhere that this trilogy takes from the lives of African slaves in the USA. I think the themes of slavery and racism are pivotal in the story.

My edition is a paperback containing the three books in one. It was published by Grand Central Publishing in 2007 and it has 746 pages.

Lilith's Brood es una trilogía de ciencia ficción que toca temas de esclavitud, diversidad, genero, sexualidad entre otros. Esta trilogía también es conocida como Xenogenesis y esta conformada por Dawn, Adulthood Rites y Imago.

A groso modo la trilogía cuenta la historia de una invasión alienigena luego de que los humanos destruyeron la tierra en guerras. Los Oankali es una especie que ha estado recorriendo el espacio por miles de años recolectando e intercambiando información genética con otras especies. Son una especie de comerciantes de genes y el resultado de innumerables mezclas controladas de razas a través de los siglos. Su forma de operar no es sencilla. Una vez que identifican una civilización a punto de desaparecer, la "salvan", no por ser buenos samaritanos, sino para usarla y mezclarse con ellos para evolucionar en una raza mejorada. Los Oankali usan bio tecnología. Sus naves y hogares están hechos de materia orgánica que se alimenta creando ecosistemas autosuficientes. Sus experimentos genéticos los hacen usando sus propios cuerpos ya que tienen la capacidad de percibir y alterar cada célula,  gen, cromosoma,  en sí mismos y en otros organismos. Ellos valoran la vida por sobretodo pero no pueden darle independencia a lo que rescatan, sino más bien lo asimilan. Los Oankali tienen una estructura social compleja, basada en sus esquemas biologicos. Tienen tres sexos: femenino, masculino y ooloi, que son los que facilitan la procreación. Ellos viven en trios y siempre enfocados en la procreación, que es una necesidad biológica más que emocional.

En Lilith's Brood los Oankali rescatan a los sobrevivientes del apocalípsis de la guerra, los duermen, curan sus heridas y enfermedades y luego los van despertando poco a poco para un  proceso de adoctrinamiento y entrenamiento para cumplir el plan de los alienigenas que es que consientan a la procreación de bebes híbridos. Un plan que va a durar siglos.

Dawn: en el primer libro de la trilogía la autora nos presenta a Lilith la mujer que los Oankali escogen para liderar a la raza humana en su proyecto de mezcla con alienigenas. Lilith podrá ser la líder de una nueva raza o la peor traidora de la historia.

Adulthood Rites: unos años después del final de Dawn el primer hijo varón de Lilith aprende a convivir con su parte humana y su parte Oankali. La tierra esta poblada de asentamientos Humano-Oankali y de focos humanos rebeldes.

Imago: sigue a otro descendiente de Lilith, esta vez el primer Ooloi hibrido. Esta novela termina de explicar el mundo Oankali, su biología y paradigma de vida.

Opinión: muy muy buena. Creo que este tipo de ciencia ficción es la que más me gusta. Ciencia ficción social y antropológica. Los Oankali esta tan bien descritos y desarrollados que ya me los imagino reales. Son unos seres muy interesantes, no sólo por su apariencia sino por su forma de pensar y operar. Los humanos en la trilogía están atrapados, con pocas opciones y todas dependientes de sus "salvadores". Tienen que aprender a vivir y sobrevivir bajo el paradigma de vida Oankali. Aunque los Oankali quieran darles libertad esta libertad esta enmarcada en su filosofía de vida. Los humanos aparecen muchas veces como marionetas, a veces seducidos a formar quintetos con los alienigenas para procrear o a vivir vidas estériles y sin sentido. Por ahí lei que está historia refleja un poco la vida de los esclavos africanos en EEUU, y si, los temas de esclavitud y racismo se reflejan en la historia mucho.
