Akira volume 6 - Katsuhiro Otomo (4🌟)

Akira, volume 6, is the last instalment of this classic of manga. Cannot say much about the plot and the ending because I don’t want to spoil it to anyone. Here an executive summary of my impressions:


1. I love how Otomo describes Neo Tokyo. Everything is very well detailed the landscapes, places, and the people. I particularly liked the characterisation of masses. Groups with different ideologies against each other. Including the disposed, the religious fanatics, the military and the rebels.
2. The mystery of the Akira’s nature and his powers was never totally clarified. The author gave us only enough information to understand why some people wanted to control him, for good or for bad.
3. This last volume is charged with fights, explosions. Too much I think. However I think the clash between Tetsuo and Kaneda was epic.
4. The art is amazing. At some points I had to stop reading to stare at a panel and imagine Otomo drawing each little detail. I am amazed at the amount of work, dedication and patience. My edition is a hardback with dustjacket. Published by Kodansha in 2017.

Akira, volume 6, es la ultima entrega de este clasico del manga. Poco puedo decir sobre la trama y el final porque no me gustaria arruinarle la lectura a nadie. Aqui un resumen ejecutivo de mis impresiones:

1. El mundo que creo Otomo en Neo Tokyo esta muy bien detallado: con bandos de gente con diferentes ideologias, incluyendo gente desposeida y fanaticos (seudo) religiosos, militares y rebeldes.
2. El misterio de la naturaleza de Akira y sus poderes no fue aclarado en su totalidad pero lo suficiente como para justificar el afan de muchos de controlarlo (para bien o para mal).
3. Este ultimo tomo esta lleno de peleas y explosiones, demasiado creo yo. Sin embargo el enfrentamiento entre Tetsuo y Kaneda estuvo muy interesante.
4. El arte es supremo. A veces me detuve a contemplar algun panel e imaginarme al autor dibujando cada pequeno detalle y maravillarme por la cantidad de trabajo y paciencia.

Autonomous - Annalee Newitz (4🌟)

Autonomous is a science fiction novel. The style may remind the reader of cyberpunk fiction, but this particular story focuses on biotechnology, biobots (robots with biological elements), super advanced drugs, mega corporations and illegal drug trafficking. Autonomous deals with philosophical issues such as the nature of life, conscience, free will, human rights and slavery.

We follow Jack (a pseudonym), a biologist turned drug pirate. Like Robin Hood she makes medical drugs to then donate them to marginalised people around the world. To fabricate these drugs, she applies reverse engineering on expensive drugs. She identifies their structure and original elements and then fabricates counterfeit drugs. At the start of the novel Jack learns about one of her drugs causing fatal side effects at a large scale. The drug is a stimulant that makes people want to work and meet their objectives in an obsessive way. However, drug users fall in a vicious cycle of work and drug, rejecting food or rest. Jack studies the original drug and realises that it was designed this way. She decides to report Zaxy, the Corporation that fabricates and distributes the drug. At the same time, a military man belonging to a Zaxy related agency, and a biobot are sent to haunt Jack. 

Opinion: I liked this novel very much. The plot is very well written. There is action, mystery and many interesting science fiction elements. Those kinds of things that leave readers thinking for days. There are plenty of philosophical issues layered in the plot and characters’ designs. Starting from Jack’s motivations to choose a live out of the law, the structure of the futurist society, the power of big corporations, the meaning of slavery and work contracts, the building of robots to work on specific tasks, etc. The concept that impacted me the most was the “Autonomy” of robots (and human beings). Autonomy gives them control over their decisions, thoughts, (seudo) feelings, and their own body. Biobots can obtain autonomy after decades of work, during which they are essentially slaves of big corporations. One weak aspect of the novel I think is that we are not given much information about the characters. We are not able to empathise with them or care for them. Also, I though the exploration of the sexuality of biobots was an interesting idea but the novel lacked some depth in this regard.

Autonomous es una novela de ciencia ficción un poco al estilo Cyberpunk pero enfocándose en biotecnología, biobots  (robot  con elementos biologicos), drogas super avanzadas, mega corporaciones y tráfico ilegal. Autonomous profundiza en temas filosóficos sobre la naturaleza de la vida, la conciencia, el libre albedrío, los derechos humanos y la esclavitud.

La historia sigue a Jack (seudónimo), una bióloga convertida en pirata de drogas. Ella es una especie de Robin Hood, fabrica drogas beneficas que luego dona a sectores de la población mundial con pocos recursos.  Para fabricar esas drogas ella aplica ingeniería inversa para deconstruir ingredientes y estructura de drogas originales. Al comienzo de la  novela una catástrofe se está cocinando ya que una de las drogas que Jack ha fabricado y distribuido esta teniendo efectos secundarios fatales. La droga en cuestión es una especie de estimulante que hace que sus consumidores deseen trabajar y cumplir objetivos de forma obsesiva. Sin embargo la gente entra en un círculo vicioso de trabajo y droga, rechazando alimento o descanso. Jack estudia más la droga y se da cuenta que la droga original esta construida así y que ella debe reportar y denunciar  a la corporación que la fabrica y vende: Zaxy. En paralelo, un agente militar de una agencia derivada de Zaxy y un biobot (robot con partes biológicas) son asignados a dar caza a Jack.

Opinión: esta novela me gustó mucho. La trama está muy bien escrita, hay acción,  misterio y muchos elementos de ciencia ficción interesantísimos, esa clase de cosas que dejan al lector pensando por días.  Hay mucha filosofía,  partiendo de las motivaciones de Jack para escoger una vida fuera de la legalidad, la estructura de la sociedad futurista, el poder de las grandes corporaciones, los conceptos de esclavitud versus contratos de trabajo hasta llegar a la tecnología para fabricar robots y asignarlos a trabajos específicos.  El concepto que más me impactó es el de Autonomía de los robots (y seres humanos) . Esta capacidad les da control sobre sus decisiones, pensamientos,   (seudo)sentimientos y su propio cuerpo. Los biobots pueden obtener autonomia después de décadas de servicios, durante los cuales son prácticamente esclavos de grandes corporaciones. El lado flojo del libro que yo vi es la parte de los personajes que sentí un poco superficiales, y la exploración de la sexualidad en los biobots  (cosa que me pareció muy interesante como idea) que también le faltó profundidad.

Amrita - Banana Yoshimoto (3🌟)

Amrita is a novel originally published in Japanese in 1994 and then translated into English in 1997 by Russell F. Wasden. It deals with daily life after tragic events.

Sakumi is a woman in her mid-twenties. She lives a quiet life with her mother and little rother Yoshio, her cousin and Junko a friend of her mom’s. Her father died when she was little, and her mother remarried, had Yoshio and got divorced. A few years back her younger sister killed herself and then Sakumi had an accident which left her amnesic. In this novel Sakumi relates the routine at home, long conversations in the kitchen, the routine in the bar where she works and the conversations with the clients. Some of the events in this novel are extracts from Sakumi’s (kind of) diary so the narrative seems like a series of disconnected stories.

One afternoon, at the bar, Sakumi is visited by Ryuichi, a writer, exboyfriend of her late sister. After a few days of meeting a relationship starts to develop. Her diary relates her interactions with Ryu, shared memories about her sister, things she can’t remember, memories of her childhood, father and others. These stories are interwoven with daily life at home, her relationship with her little brother, who is showing signs of having paranormal powers.

Opinion: as before I loved Yoshimoto’s narrative style, but this time I didn’t enjoy much the structure of the story. I felt there was no plot for most of the novel. Sakumi, the main character, who has memory loss problems, tries to relate events in her past life. The result is a sometimes confusing jigsaw narrative. I also think this novel is too long for Yoshimoto’s style. There were too many irrelevant episodes which watered down and made the story lose its flavours. Leaving this aside, I found the story’s main theme interesting: life of people who have lost loved ones, how they go on, how they rebuild themselves and how they build motivation to keep living. I liked the “daily life” tone of the novel. I also liked the paranormal aspect (or is it magic realism?) although it confused me at the beginning. In this novel some characters can see or feel the dead, read other people’s thoughts and even get message from aliens! I imagine Yoshimoto uses this resource to symbolise the hardships of life. This is evident in the case of Yoshio who cannot deal with the things he sees in his head which I understood as an internal fight to accept the death of her sister and the divorce of his parents.

My edition is in Paperback published in 2011 by Faber and Faber. It has 366 pages.

Amrita es una novela publicada originalmente en japonés en 1994 y luego traducida al inglés en 1997 por Russell F. Wasden. Toca el tema de la vida cotidiana después de hechos trágicos.

Sakumi es una mujer de unos veinti-tantos años. Vive una vida tranquila, con su madre, su pequeño hermano Yoshio, su prima, y Junko, una amiga de su mamá. Su padre murió cuando ella era una niña, su madre se volvió a casar,  tuvo un hijo y se divorció. Hace unos años su hermana menor se suicidó y luego Sakumi sufre un accidente que le hace perder la memoria. En esta historia Sakumi nos relata la rutina en su casa, las largas conversaciones en la cocina, la rutina en el bar donde trabaja, y las conversaciones con los clientes. Un día tarde en el bar recibe la visita de RYuichi, un escritor que había sido novio de su hermana. Luego de unos días nos percatamos que hay una relación entre ellos. Sakumi nos cuenta en una especie de diario, en una serie de relatos a veces inconexos, sobre sus interacciones con Ryu, las memorias compartidas sobre su hermana, aquellas cosas que no logra recordar, cosas sobre su infancia, su padre, entre otras.  Al mismo tiempo se entremezclan el día a día en su casa, y sobretodo la relación con su hermano Yoshio, que aparentemente esta demostrando signos de tener poderes extrasensoriales.

Opinión: la prosa como siempre me gustó,  pero en esta ocasión la estructura de la historia no me convenció. Durante gran parte de la novela sentí que no había trama. Sakumi, el personaje principal, que tiene problemas de pérdida de memoria, intenta narrar eventos en su vida pasada. El resultado es una especie de narrativa en rompecabezas. También creo que la novela está muy larga, con muchos episodios con poca relevancia, que hicieron  que la historia se "aguara" o que pierda sabor.  Dejando eso de lado (con un poco de esfuerzo) la temática me pareció interesante: la vida de gente que ha perdido seres queridos, cómo continuan, cómo se reconstruyen y se motivan para seguir viviendo. Me gustó el tono "del día a dia" de la novela. Me gustó también el aspecto paranormal o de realismo mágico (no se como llamarlo) aunque me confundió al principio. En esta novela algunos personajes pueden ver o sentir a los muertos, leer los pensamientos, de otras personas y hasta recibir mensajes de extraterrestres  (¡!) Me imagino que la autora utiliza este recurso para simbolizar los problemas de poder adaptarse a una nueva vida. Esto es resaltante en el caso de Yoshio que no puede lidiar no las cosas que pasan en su cabeza (sus poderes extrasensoriales) y que yo entendí como la lucha interior para aceptar el fallecimiento de su hermana y el divorcio de sus padres .

The Daughter of Time - Josephine Tey (3.5🌟)

The Daughter of Time is a detective, historical and mystery novel. Originally published in 1951. The title of the novel originates from an old saying, Truth is the Daughter of Time.

The story is in fact a simple one. A police detective, hospitalised, investigates a crime committed centuries ago. Alan Grant, hospitalised after being shot, cannot deal with boredom. His friends bring him books to keep him distracted, but none work. Until his actress friend Marta comes. Marta brings with him a series of portraits of famous people. Checking the portraits Grant is intrigues by one in particular. That one of Richard III, that infamous king who killed his nephews to get access to the Crown.  Grant asks nurses, doctors and de visitors what they think and de now of Richard III. gradually his interest grows. He asks friends to get him books and realises that events do not add up. After a few days he is visited by Brent Carradine, a historian friend of Martha's. Carradine, who works at the British Museum, searches for historial data and documents to prove the theories Grant is creating based in his experience as a policeman. Grant believes that Richard III was not a killer but a victim of a conspiracy.

Opinion: for a novel in which all the action takes place in a hospital room this is an interesting read.  All there is, is one policeman gathering historial data from his bed and connecting evidence as he does in his actual job. I liked how Grant rationalised everything he learned. The novel at some points becomes a police investigation. Another aspect of the novel I liked is how the author taught us a bit of hystory theory while uncovering some historical inaccuracies,  if not lies. That is, how rumours become, with the passing of time, unquestionable truths, even to professional historians. And how a good historian should get to the original sources and official documents to make sure something is true. Despite all of the above I found this novel to be too much of history and little action. The narrative was slow and heavy at times.

I got the edition  I read at my local library. Published by Arrow Books in 2009. It has 222 pages.

The Daughter  of Time, o La Hija del Tiempo en su traducción al español, es una novela policíaca, histórica y de misterio fuera de lo común originalmente publicada en 1951.  El Título de la novela viene de un viejo proverbio, Truth is the Daughter of Time, o la Verdad es la Hija del Tiempo.

La trama de la novela en realidad es sencilla: un policía hospitalizado que investiga un crimen siglos atrás leyendo libros de historia. Alan Grant, un policía hospitalizado por una herida de bala, no puede con el aburrimiento de su encierro. Sus amigos le llevan libros para que se distraiga pero nada funciona, hasta que Marta,  una amiga actriz, le lleva una serie de retratos de personajes famosos. Revisando los retratos Grant queda intrigado por uno en particular,  el de Richard III, el rey infame que mató a sus sobrinos para quedarse con el derecho al trono. Grant comienza a preguntar a enfermeras, doctores y visitantes lo que piensan o saben de Richard III y se empieza a interesar por su historia. Tanto es su interés que pide libros y empieza a sospechar que algo no encaja. Luego de unos dias recibe la ayuda de un conocido de su amiga Marta, Brent Carradine, un joven historiador. Carradine quien trabaja en el British Museum, busca datos y escritos históricos para corroborar las teorías que Grant empieza a tejer utilizado su experiencia policial. Y es que Grant sospecha que Richard III no fue un asesino sino víctima de una conspiración.

Opinión: para ser un libro en donde toda la acción se centra en un cuarto de hospital con un policía postrado, recopilando información histórica y atando cabos como si se tratase de un caso policial, me pareció muy entretenido. Aparte de los datos históricos me gustó la forma en que Grant los racionaliza, tanto así que la novela se convierte en un caso policial más que histórico. Otro aspecto que me gustó es como al ir destapando algunas "falsedades historicas" la autora nos enseña también un poco de teoría histórica. Es decir como muchos rumores con el tiempo llegan a convertirse en verdades hasta para los historiadores, y como un buen trabajo debe remitirse a las fuentes y a documentos oficiales para asegurarse de que algo es cierto. Lo negativo, pues quizás fue mucha historia con poca acción, la narrativa se me hizo un poco pesada y lenta de leer.

La edición que leí,  gracias a mi biblioteca local, fue publicada por Arrow Books en 2009. Tiene 222 páginas.
