The story follows Magnus, an expert in mineralogy who works for the Swedish government. He is married with the eldest daughter of the country’s Prime Minister and lives in a house paid by his father in law. One day, Magnus, is asked to travel to the north of the country to (unofficially) investigate 3 murders in a settlement at Blackasen mountain. The real reason why the Prime Minister is interested in the murders is the imminent selling of land around the mountain. This lucrative business could be hindered by the bad news. Magnus has no other choice than to accept the job. However in the morning of his departure the Prime Minister forces him to take his other daughter, Lovisa, with him. As with Magnus Lovisa has no other alternative than to go. This is a punishment for the young woman after her father found her behaving indecorously at home. So Magnus and Lovisa travel to Lulea, a town close to Blackasen. In Lulea they meet with the man accused of the murders and local authorities. Magnus is not convinced that the man in jail is guilty but cannot do much as the prisoner is not talking. Then the pair travel to the settlement where the murders took place. They discover a world so different to them they feel outsiders. The Mountain itself is another enigma, so Magnus decides to draw a map of it. During his mapping and mineralogy work he immerses himself in the world of the settlers, their customs and philosophy of life. At the same time, he learns about the Lapp, a nomad tribe who stay in the Mountain during the winters and who seem to have some relation to the murders.
Opinion: as with Wolf Winter, I loved this novel. This story is different from the first one though. However it made me feel similar sensations. Although most of the events happen under daylight, it is inevitable to feel the darkness within the characters. Each one of them carries emotional burden, a secret. Each one of them is an enigma. My favourite characters Lovisa, Magnus and Ester (a Lapp woman who helps Magnus) are well constructed, with layers, growing as the story develops. Lovisa is my favourite of all due to her changes from beginning to end. She shows that she is not a spoiled, rich girl and actually her character raises really interesting questions about the role of women in her time, the role of settlers and the life of nomads. Magnus is also a very interesting character. His passion for mineralogy is evident but more significant to me is his loss of early childhood memories which becomes part of the mystery. Thanks to Ester we learn about the Lapp way of life and I found it very gripping to see her spying on Magnus to protect her people to end up helping him.
My edition is a hardcover with dust jacket published by Hodder & Stoughton in 2016. It has 337 pages. The book includes an interview of the Ekbak and her author notes.

In the Month of the Midnight Sun es una novela de misterio gótico e histórico. Los hechos tienen lugar en el norte de Suecia en los alrededores de Blackasen, una montaña ficticia. No es la primera vez que Cecilia Ekbak escribe sobre Blackasen. En su primera novela, Wolf Winter, ella narra una historia de asesinatos en la montaña durante un invierno. Como el título del libro lo sugiere la novela que comento aqui ocurre durante un verano en el mismo lugar.
La historia sigue a Magnus, un experto en mineralogia que trabaja para el gobierno Sueco. El esta casado con la hija mayor del Primer Ministro y vive en una casa pagada por éste. Un dia Magnus recibe un encargo del primer ministro, y es que tiene que viajar al norte del pais a investigar (extra oficialmente) el caso de 3 asesinatos en un asentamiento en la montaña Blackasen. La verdadera razón por la preocupación del gobernante es la probable venta (lucrativa para el gobierno) de unos terrenos en los alredodores que puede complicarse si la noticia de los asesinatos se divulga. Magnus no tiene mas remedio que aceptar la misión, pero en la manana de su partida su jefe practicamente lo obliga a llevar a su otra hija, Lovisa, en el viaje. Lovisa no esta contenta pero no le queda de otra. Parace ser que el ministro encontro a su hija haciendo algo inapropiado y quiere castigarla sacándola de la casa. Y asi Magnus viaja, con su cuñada, a Lulea, un pueblo cercano a Blackasen. En Lulea conoce al sujeto acusado de los asesinatos y hace preguntas a las autoridades locales. Magnus no esta convencido de que el hombre en prisión sea culpable pero no puede hacer mucho porque el no quiere hablar. Luego se encamina al asentamiento en donde ocurrieron los hechos y descubre un mundo extraño para el. La misma montaña es un enigma, y Magnus con su alma de minerologo decide dibujar un mapa de ella, mientras cumple su encargo. En su labor de mapeo y de investigador, Magnus se mete en el mundo de los colonos, en sus costumbres y filosofía de vida. Al mismo tiempo empieza a conocer algo de los Lapps, una tribu nomada que vive sus inviernos en la montana y que al parecer tienen que ver con los asesinatos.
Opinion: al igual que Wolf Winter, esta novela me gusto mucho. Esta historia es diferente a la otra pero provoca sensaciones parecidas. Y aunque todos los hechos ocurren bajo la luz del sol, es inevitable sentir la oscuridad interior en sus personajes. Cada uno lleva una carga, un secreto. Cada uno es un enigma. Mis tres personajes favoritos, Lovisa, Magnus y Ester (una Lapp que ayuda a Magnus) estan muy bien construidos, con capas, y creciendo a lo largo de la historia. Lovisa es la que mas me gustó debido a su cambio de principio a fin, a que demuestra que es mas que una nina rica consentida, a que saca a flote muchas preguntas importantes en cuanto al papel de la mujer en su epoca (1850s), al rol de los colonos y la vida de los nomadas. Magnus Tambien es super interesante. Su passion por la mineralogia es resaltate pero mas que eso su incapacidad de recorder su primera infancia forma parte del misterio de la obra. Gracias a Ester descubrimos mucho de la forma de vida de los Lapps y es muy interesante ver como empieza espiando a Magnus para proteger a su pueblo para luego ayudarlo.
