Ghost and the Japanese: Cultural Experience in Japanese Death Legends is a non-fiction, semi-academic work on the surviving and dissemination of ancient Japanese legends about ghosts. The book is divided in two sections. The first section explains the nature of ghost’s legends, and the way they have been collected by ethnographers and folklorists. The second section narrates some of these legends alongside short interpretations by the authors. These legends are classified by themes.
Opinion: I really enjoyed the first section of the book, particularly the references to Kunio Yanagita, an ethnographer, precursor of interpretivist and subjective approaches, who collected Japanese legends. I didn’t enjoy the second section as much as the first one. I found it boring and repetitive at some points. Too many legends, similar between them. And the individual explanations and interpretations, in my opinion, did not add much to the narratives. I would have preferred to have less legends and in-depth discussions of legends grouped by themes.
I downloaded a pdf version of the book from my university’s online library.
----------
Ghost and the Japanese: Cultural Experience in Japanese Death Legends (Fantasmas y los japoneses: una experiencia cultural en leyendas japonesas de muerte.) es un libro de no-ficci贸n, con un toque acad茅mico, que trata el tema de supervivencia y divulgaci贸n de leyendas japonesas sobre fantasmas a lo largo de siglos.
