The Hyperion Cantos is a science fiction saga with space opera and hard sci-fi elements. There are 4 books: Hyperion (Locus award in 1990), The Fall of Hyperion (Locus award 1991) , Endymion and The Rise of Endymion (Locus award 1998). The saga contains two story arcs, novels 1 and 2, and novels 3 and 4 respectively. This saga is considered a science fiction classic, especially because of the two first master piece novels. However, I would like to recommend you to read all four novels because they are outstanding.
Hyperion is a planet at the edge of the “Hegemony of Man”. It is considered a second-class planet. It has been colonised but does not belong to the Hegemony yet. The Hegemony of Man is a political and technological system including hundreds of planets in our galaxy. All planets are connected via “farcaster” technology which allows immediate transportation between planets light years away. In addition to farcasters the Hegemony uses “data spheres” a kind of data networks which together form the “mega sphere” web. Human beings can access data spheres through devices implanted in their brains. In addition to that, the Mega Sphere houses, in one of its levels called TechnoCore, hundreds of AI personalities called the Core. These AI play an important role sustaining the Hegemony.
The first book, Hyperion, tells the story of 7 pilgrims coming from all sectors of the Hegemony. Together they are going to Hyperion to meet with the “Shriek”, a monster who inhabits the Time Tombs, and who is known to have killed everyone who has approached him. This novel narrates the trip and backgrounds of six of the pilgrims before the trip. These stories help the reader to understand the motivations of each of them and to know about certain historical events relevant to the Hegemony’s problems. (I loved this novel because of the way Simmon’s describes each pilgrim and the literary references included.)
The Fall of Hyperion begins exactly where Hyperion ends. The story continues focusing on each of the pilgrims, on the mystery of the Shrike, and on the internal conflicts among political factions within the Hegemony, including The Core and the Ousters (genetically modified humans). I loved this novel because of the space opera elements, space travel and interplanetary battles and the ending is mind blowing!
In Endymion the story takes place 300 years after the end of The Fall of Hyperion. Includes new characters, except one who we know from the other books. However, the story is directly related to the first story arc. We follow Raul Endymion, born in Hyperion, who has to hide and look after a girl, half human, half AI. In my opinion, this is the weakest book of the four. However, the story and narrative are still engaging.
In The Rise of Endymion we are still following Raul and his voyages across the galaxy. At last, in this novel, we get revelations on the secrets of The Core, history and objectives, what is and where did the Shrike come from, and the technology behind the farcasters. I must admit I loved this book so much I felt empty when I finished it.
The two first books I own are part of the SF Masterworks series by Gollancz. I have the other two in an omnibus edition also by Gollancz.
Los Cantos de Hyperion es una saga de ciencia ficción con elementos de ópera espacial y ciencia ficción dura. Consta de 4 libros. Hyperion (ganó el premio Locus en 1990), The Fall of Hyperion (La Caida de Hyperion) (ganó el premio Locus en 1991), Endymion y The Rise of Endymion (El Ascenso de Endymion) (ganó el premio Locus en 1998). La saga tiene dos arcos argumentales. El primero con las novelas 1 y 2, y el segundo arco, novelas 3 y 4. Esta saga es considerada como un clásico de la ciencia ficción. Sobretodo los dos primeros libros, que son obras maestras. Sin embargo yo les quiero recomendar que lean todos los cuatro libros porque son estupendos.
Hyperion es un planeta situado al borde de la "Hegemony of Man" (Hegemonía de hombre). Esta colonizado pero todavía no forma parte de la Hegemonía, es decir es un planeta de segunda clase. La Hegemonía del hombre es un sistema político y tecnológico que incluye cientos de planetas en nuestra galaxia. Todos los planetas estan conectados por tecnologías de "farcasters" que permite el transporte casi instantáneo entre planetas situados años luz uno del otro. Además de los farcasters existe, a través de toda la Hegemonía, redes de datos llamadas "data spheres" y que unidas forman la web mega sphere. Los seres humanos pueden acceder a las data spheres a través de dispositivos implantados en sus cerebros. La mega sphere contiene además, en un nivel de datos llamado "TechnoCore", a cientos de personalidades de inteligencia artificial, llamados "the Core". Estas IA juegan un papel preponderante en la sostenibilidad de la Hegemonía.
El primer libro, Hyperion, cuenta la historia de siete peregrinos provenientes de diversas partes del sistema, que unidos viajan al planeta Hyperion para encontrarse con el "Shrike", un monstruo que vive en una zona del planeta llamada las tumbas del tiempo y que es conocido por aniquilar despiadadamente a cualquiera que se le acerque. Esta novela narra el viaje de los peregrinos y las historias de seis de ellos previas al viaje. Esas historias nos ayudan a ir comprendiendo poco a poco sus motivaciones, y a enterarnos de eventos históricos relevantes a la problemática de la Hegemonía y su tecnologia. (Esta novela me encantó por la forma que describe las historia de cada peregrino y por las referencias literarias que contiene.)
La Caida de Hyperion empieza exactamente donde se quedó la primera novela. Continúa con la historia, ya no enfocándose exclusivamente en cada uno de los peregrinos sino también en el misterio del "Shrike", en conflictos internos entre facciones de la Hegemonía, incluyendo a "the Core" y the Ousters (seres humanos geneticamente alterados para sobrevivir en ambientes diversos). (Esta novela me encantó sobretodo por su aspecto de ópera espacial y viajes y batallas interplanetarios. ¡Y el final es Excelente!)
Los acontecimientos en Endymion ocurren unos 300 años después de la Caida de Hyperion. Incluye nuevos personajes (a excepción de uno que se repite), pero tiene relación directa con los acontecimientos en los dos primeros libros. La historia sigue a Raúl Endymion, un nativo de Hyperion, a quien se le encarga la misión, extremadamente importante, de esconder y cuidar a una niña, parte humana y parte IA. (Este libro, a mi parecer, es el más flojo de los cuatro, pero aún así, empieza una historia que te engancha profundamente.)
En el Ascenso de Endymion continuamos con la historia de Raúl y sus periplos a través de la galaxia. Y al fin, en esta novela se nos van revelando los secretos de "the core" su historia y objetivos, qué es y de donde vino "the Shrike" y al mismo tiempo explica la naturaleza del fenómeno que permitía el funcionamiento los farcasters en tiempos de la Hegemonía. (Que puedo decir, cuando terminé de leer este libro, me paré y aplaudí.)
Mis ediciones son en inglés : los dos primeros libros son parte de la colección SF Masterworks de Gollancz. Los dos últimos los compré en un Ómnibus que contiene las dos novelas en un solo libro, también editada por Gollancz.
